Exhibition “Ukraine. February 24, 2022 -…” is a constantly updated photo report on the situations that Levila’s team of journalists is currently facing in Ukraine. The photos of photographer Annika Haas from Ukraine 21 years ago are juxtaposed with photographs reflecting the war in Ukraine.
On February 24, Russia launched a war with Ukraine on a large scale. A few days later, three Levila journalists took off for Ukraine – former mission soldier and documentary filmmaker Erik Tikan, editor Mari Mets and Indian-born Canadian photographer Sami Siva to capture the stories of people involved in the whirlwind of war.
“During his trip to Ukraine, Levila has been exposed to surprising humanity and inhumane destruction. Our team has seen fatigue in the eyes of fleeing families as well as determination on the faces of men going to war and has tried to document it all for the future, ”says Daniel Vaarik, the founder of Levila.
Annika Haas’s exhibition “In Ukraine as in the previous life” was recorded 21 years ago, on a trip to Ukraine in 2001, in the Kiev and Volyn regions, and in the Carpathian Mountains. The photos in the exhibition take you on a journey to a hospitable, scenic, free country that is today ravaged by war and ignorance.
Ukraine, with its sincerity, has left a deep imprint on many. The past life of Ukraine captured in Haas in early 2022 is both beautiful and painful. The journey of a year ago and the title formulated at that time have acquired another important dimension and meaning in today’s situation.
An overview of the experience phenomenon was also completed in 2001 in the form of a travel diary, extracts of which have been published within the exhibition.
The exhibitions will remain open for an unknown time in the Three Trees Gallery of Telliskivi Creative City.
