Inhumanity of System, 2023

By Viktor Kiss

1300 x 70 x 16 cm

Ceramic, metal, wood

The installation is dedicated to people who were forcibly taken from their homes and countries during the Second World War; to children whose bodies were branded with degrading identification numbers in the form of ink tattoos; and to families who were burned alive in concentration camps and “houses of death.” The central figure of the composition is made of ceramic. Its distorted and disfigured face refers to the cynical inscription “Arbeit macht frei.”A white chimney rises from the figure’s head, symbolising the crematorium furnaces in which human bodies were destroyed. Above the central image are two ceramic figures -a man and a woman. They represent the souls of the victims ascending towards the sky. The entire composition is mounted on charred wooden boards enclosed within a rusted metal frame. The structure is suspended from heavy, rusted chains and hooks resembling equipment used for hanging and butchering animal carcasses.
