From a semiotic perspective, my sculpture is an open text. From the standpoint of art theory, it represents an open form. In the postmodern era, the creation of closed works seems rather to reflect poor practice. The viewer should not be forced into or suffocated by the artist’s personal interpretations. It is important to express one’s idea clearly while still allowing viewers the freedom to form their own interpretations. If the viewer is at a similar level of development to the artist and is, so to speak, on the same wavelength, they may be able to grasp the artist’s original idea. If, however, the viewer is more intellectually or creatively developed than the artist, they may produce even more diverse interpretations. Excessively direct explanations restrict the viewer’s imagination. As Roland Barthes wrote,“the author is dead“ – and with the author, closed forms have also disappeared.
