Stefanie Almqvist is a multidisciplinary artist working with textiles, painting, installation, and performance. Relationships form the foundation of her artistic practice, through which she explores love, friendship, intimacy, and the boundaries that shape human connections. Her works often invite audiences to participate directly, using costume, spatiality, and storytelling as tools for creating shared experiences.
Drawing inspiration from decadence and maximalism, Almqvist’s visual language exists between the bold pink aesthetics of the early 2000s and the detailed, melancholic imagery of childhood fairytale books. She is interested in reclaiming a childlike way of seeing, where objects and materials are valued for their beauty and emotional resonance rather than their economic worth. Working with accessible materials such as satin fabrics, plastic beads, and glass crystals, she transforms everyday materials into immersive environments that echo the language of luxury while remaining deliberately approachable.
Large-scale installations and oversized objects frequently appear in her work, including wedding cakes, friendship necklaces, and bows. Through these exaggerated forms, she investigates themes of desire, belonging, memory, and emotional vulnerability. Her interactive performance För många prinsessor (Too Many Princesses) exemplifies this approach by inviting visitors to dress up in order to gain access to the exhibition space, playfully questioning inclusion, identity, and participation.
At the heart of Almqvist’s practice is an interest in preserving emotionally charged moments, both joyful and painful. Whether exploring first love, friendship, longing, loss, or nostalgia, she approaches each work as a vessel for memory. Through every stitch and brushstroke, she constructs narratives that transform personal experiences into shared emotional landscapes.
