Karl-Erik Talvet
ABOUT ANIMALS TOO
(painting, installative drawing)
March 31 – May 4, 2025
Gallery Metropol 6 m2 and Metropol Cabinet
(Vana-Kalamaja 46, Tallinn)
Exhibition is open by appointment
The aim of the next exhibition at Metropol gallery is to offer the audience sincere and
heart-warming joy for the eyes, in hope that it would bring a little relief to the soul in anxious
times and divert attention away from the troubles caused by people.
The gallery’s superstar, cat Elektra, will also have an interesting spring, as she will be able to
communicate with dogs, seagull and other characters right in the living quarters.
In recent years, Karl-Erik Talvet has attracted attention at exhibitions with his military-themed
paintings and illustrations, but this exhibition focuses on the animal kingdom instead:
“In these anxious times, when the world seems to be heading towards increasingly uncertain
paths, I want to turn towards a simpler and more sincere direction. We are getting face to face
with impending destruction, and I think it is high time we learned from our four-legged
companions how to live more harmoniously with our environment and to express more
sincerity instead of hypocrisy, secrecy and lies.”
The exhibition consists of compositions painted during recent years using mainly the spatula
technique and an installation of drawings. Behind which are real-life situations and memoiries
experienced by the author.
The general mood of the works is rather pessimistic, but at the same time there is hope present,
that there is a way in the world to guide us to the right path.
Karl-Erik Talvet (b. 1991 in Paris) lives and works in Tallinn. In 2018, he graduated from the
Estonian Academy of Arts with a master’s degree in painting, and he has also resided (2016/17)
at the Brera Academy of Arts in Milan. In 2019, Talvet went on a military mission to the Republic
of Mali, where he performed the duties of an interpreter, and has used the experience gained
there in his creative work. Talvet is mainly engaged in painting and comics and has participated
in numerous exhibitions. He is a member of the Estonian Painters’ Association and the Estonian
Comics Society.
