Educational cards, 2024

4 x 6.5 cm

Glass

“Educational cards” is a part of my Master’s project at Vilnius Academy of Art titled “Forced Migration. The Way Home,” inspired by my personal experience of forced migration from Belarus to Lithuania. The project is about the importance of taking the initiative yourself, constantly taking steps to adapt to a new country to find a sense of home sooner rather than later. Each glass brick is a reinterpretation of the paper cards used by people to learn the words of a new language. Words in two languages are here forever fused to emphasize the biculturalism that each forced migrant acquires in the process of adapting and adjusting to a new culture. The words in the cards are not chosen at random. They all describe the process of adaptation in some way and are verbs. The project consists of 34 such glass cards, emphasizing the 34 small steps I have already taken in migration. For so many months I have been living continuously in Lithuania and learning Lithuanian.
