Avo Keerend

Artist is based in: Estonia

Avo Keerend (1920–2012) was an Estonian graphic artist and painter whose creative career spanned more than six decades. He began his art studies in 1936, initially focusing on printmaking, later expanding his practice to include painting. In his early work, Keerend primarily employed intaglio techniques, creating naturalistic still lifes, nudes, and genre scenes.

In the late 1950s, he also began working with relief printing, particularly linocut, which allowed him to further develop his sense of form and composition. The 1960s marked a significant turning point in his practice, reflecting the broader modernist shift of the period. His approach became more constructive, gradually moving away from figurative representation toward abstract, geometric compositions. From this point on, rhythm, structure, and the relationships between forms became central to his work. Keerend continued to work with abstract and geometric visual language consistently throughout the following decades, including into the 2000s, establishing his position as a key figure in the development of modernist tendencies in Estonian graphic art. His work is characterized by a sensitive balance between structural clarity and visual rhythm, where the image does not aim to narrate but rather functions as an autonomous visual system.
