Aatos Salkosalo is an artist originally from the forested industrial region of Pirkanmaa, Finland, working primarily with moving image and sculpture. Since 2021, he has studied animation at the art department of Turku University of Applied Sciences. After participating in several film productions, his artistic focus gradually shifted toward sculpture, particularly casting methods.
Salkosalo’s practice critically examines militarism, the normalization of violence, and the role of language in legitimizing conflict while obscuring its human and environmental consequences. His work is informed by contemporary media culture, popular imagery, and everyday visual and linguistic narratives. Earlier studies in linguistics and communication continue to shape his interest in the relationship between language, power, and collective identity.
His artistic approach combines digital tools with traditional sculptural techniques, alongside extensive planning and the use of recycled and scavenged materials. Many of his works emerge from discarded furniture and found everyday objects. He values open access to knowledge and interdisciplinary collaboration as essential parts of his practice.
In his artistic thesis, Salkosalo explored the Finnish relationship with militarism and the transformation of collective identity following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Finland’s accession to NATO, and Donald Trump’s second presidential term. The thesis took the form of an installation consisting of three central sculptural bodies surrounded by smaller artifacts and objects that establish the atmosphere and conceptual framework of the work. Rather than assigning blame, the installation seeks to create a reflective and peaceful environment where viewers can confront their own perceptions of militarism and its consequences.
