Through an open call, Tallinn Art Hall sought a curator-project manager to develop and oversee the implementation of the Lasnamäe Pavilion’s exhibition and public programme. ENKKL submitted a proposal centred on supporting young artists, collective creation, and collaboration with school students, families and local initiatives in Lasnamäe.
“The collective proposal from the Estonian Association of Young Contemporary Art came as a surprise to us, but after looking at it more closely, we concluded that what Estonia is currently missing is precisely a contemporary art space created by young people for young people. ENKKL’s well-considered approach, combined with Mia Maria and Irma’s passion, experience and courage, offers an opportunity to develop a programme in Lasnamäe that genuinely speaks to young people,” said Paul Aguraiuja, Director of Tallinn Art Hall.
ENKKL aims to shape the pavilion into a place where young artists can experiment and engage with issues that matter to them, and where young people in Lasnamäe can have a say in what happens in their surroundings. Alongside exhibitions, the programme will include workshops, discussions and film evenings, offering a diverse range of activities and creating opportunities for audiences of different ages to come together and exchange ideas.
“We were inspired by the idea expressed in Tallinn Art Hall’s open call that, in an ideal future, the Lasnamäe Pavilion would be the place 16-year-olds would choose to encounter art. Our 15-member team came together to present Tallinn Art Hall with a utopian vision of a pavilion where teenage artists and young people interested in art could meet young artists from across Estonia, and where they could explore and practise co-creation. At the heart of the pavilion are community, environmental and social responsibility, openness and generosity. We are delighted that Tallinn Art Hall embraced our vision, and we are now setting out to make it a reality together,” said ENKKL representatives Mia Maria Rohumaa and Irma Holm.
Mia Maria Rohumaa is a curator, writer, gallerist and art educator. She holds a BA in Art History and Visual Culture Studies from the Estonian Academy of Arts and is currently pursuing an MA in Contemporary Art at EKA. Rohumaa has worked as an education curator at the Niguliste Museum and has contributed to the organisation of ENKKL exhibitions and other projects.
Irma Holm is an artist and project manager who holds a BA in Photography from the Estonian Academy of Arts. She was project manager for Together, We’re Warmer, an exhibition presented by ENKKL and the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia, and has also organised exhibitions, conferences and workshops.
Founded in 2022, the Estonian Association of Young Contemporary Art (Eesti Noorte Kaasaegse Kunsti Liit, ENKKL) now has 66 members and has organised exhibitions, summer schools, conferences and other art events. Its activities focus on creating opportunities for young artists and fostering collective ways of working.
The Lasnamäe Pavilion’s new programme will begin in October 2026.
