To exist on a border means to live with constant uncertainty. Along the Baltic Sea coast, the shoreline is constantly changing, and in some places the sea is slowly washing away the coast and nearby homes. This shifting border reveals stories of people trying to preserve their living space while knowing that nature will always be stronger. This master’s thesis explores life along the coast and “waterhomes” as an example of temporary existence in a place where the shoreline never stops shifting, threatening not only buildings and nature, but also people’s sense of permanence, stability and connection to their home.
