I use the grid as a reference to Rosalind Krauss’s article “The Grid” (1979). It is an order that is correctly constructed, forms a larger whole from smaller pieces, spreads out so far that it can no longer be grasped or dealt with as a whole. With carbon paper, lithography and grids, I explore the loss of collectivity and the role of the individual in social and economic systems. Systems that are built on optimization, efficiency and ever-increasing production. Systems that no one person or group is responsible for and can be blamed. We are all just individuals, collectively alone.
