In my thesis, I turn my gaze toward grey areas that usually go unnoticed while moving through the city. These places are necessary for everyday life and are often passed through, yet they remain visually in the background. I am interested in the border zone between city and nature, where one can simultaneously sense human presence, the wildness of nature, and the wearing down of materials. I view non-places, gray areas, and liminal space. In each painting of the series, I depict a perceptual gray area in the city of Valga. In the paintings, I combine different viewpoints and fragments from these places, so that each painting gives rise to a new kind of “non-place”.
