The altarpiece in the ‘Doomsday Cathedral’ is inspired by the Sistine Chapel ceiling in the Vatican painted by Michelangelo. In Edward von Lõngus’ interpretation, the search for bliss is equated with wealth and the pursuit of it. Everyone is rich in heaven. Everyone desires to ascend the bright perch, but few are destined to have their dream fulfilled.
Concurrently, the altarpiece illustrates the modern societal model in which the top 1% of the population owns most of the world’s wealth and the lower 99% struggles for the scraps. Hanging from the cathedral ceiling, the eight-metre painting has been executed on cold-rolled steel plates and weighs more than half a ton.
