Sgraffito, plywood, metal
The work draws from the Eastern European region, where the layered memories of recent history play an important role against the backdrop of continuing security instability. At its core are layers and gaps of memory, and the need to access or sense the invisible and the unspeakable—here approached through the sgraffito technique.
The organic form of a skinned hare hide and the scratching gesture characteristic of sgraffito shape the visual language of the work. The incised marks resemble words or images but remain unreadable. Welded elements together with the scratched surface form their own sign system or ornamented language.
The material-driven approach emphasises the erosion and fragility of surfaces. At the centre of the work is an exploratory act—literally digging into the material in search of answers or in an attempt to fill the gaps.
