Inflatable Palm Trees II, 2023
130 x 175 cm
oil on linen
In the painting “Inflatable Palm trees II”, I depict palm trees I have seen in summer in a Lithuanian resort. Inflatable palm trees grew on one of the resort’s lakes, forming with their sharp, unusually shaped leaves an ominous obstacles’ course or a kind of palm grove, uncharacteristic for our climate zone. The context of the surroundings lends the depicted object an inevitable irony which is also characteristic of the object itself. The painting poses a dilemma to the viewer, asking whether what it depicts is real and questioning the meaning of reality itself. The objects depicted in the painting become like props and are taken to another non-existent environment, the location of which we cannot determine.
