Oil on medical textile (canvas)
In Counting Heartbeats, I bring together several ideas: the medical monitoring of cardiac activity, our dependence on technology, youthful carelessness, and the ambiguity of the situation.
The title Counting Heartbeats has a poetic and metaphorical quality. By bringing together art and medicine, the work opens up additional layers of meaning. In medicine, cardiac monitoring encompasses a broad range of methods used to examine and evaluate heart rhythm, the electrical activity of the heart, its structural condition, and blood circulation. Outside the medical context, it evokes associations with emotions and the “matters of the heart”—love.
The work also carries a trace of youthfulness.
Please note: The artwork is painted directly on medical textile. An earlier description mistakenly stated “medical textile application”, but this was an error. The painting itself is executed on medical textile rather than incorporating it as an applied element.
