Audrė Tylienė is a Lithuanian painter whose practice brings together contemporary painting and medical experience. She graduated with an MA in Painting from the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2026. Prior to the master’s programme, she spent three years at the Academy as a non-degree student, studying painting, drawing, and creative project development. She began her artistic education at the J. Vienožinskis Children’s Art School and later continued her studies in a private art studio.

Before pursuing art professionally, Tylienė graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Vilnius University and has worked as an anaesthesiologist and intensive care physician since 2008. Her long-standing medical practice has become an integral part of her artistic methodology, shaping both the themes and conceptual framework of her work. During her master’s studies, she developed the idea of a “dual gaze”—seeing simultaneously through the perspective of an artist and a physician. For Tylienė, both art and medicine are rooted in attentive observation, interpretation, and continuous inquiry, where signs, context, and intuition play equally significant roles.

Her practice explores body memory, embodied experience, and emotional states. Working primarily in figurative painting, she employs medical imagery and hospital textiles not as documentary material but as visual tools for expressing embodied experience. Once transferred into an artistic context, medical imagery becomes open to multiple interpretations and acquires metaphorical dimensions, while hospital textiles retain subtle traces of their institutional origins despite their seemingly decorative appearance. Some of her paintings are created directly on hospital textiles, while others incorporate textile appliqué.

Through her daily work with critically ill patients, Tylienė has gained an intimate understanding of vulnerability, pain, loss, and the fragility of the human body—experiences that have become central to her artistic practice. Her MA project culminated in the exhibition Awakenings and the accompanying research paper Etuaptmumk (Seeing with Two Eyes): The Text as the “Medical History” of an Artistic Research Project.
