A Split Path, 2026
Õlimaal magnetitel
This graduation thesis explores the position of a young artist in the art world, focusing on prejudices that are perceived as unwritten rules influencing both creative and economic choices. Thesis is driven by the question of whether an artist must choose between fine art and commercial art, or if it is possible to combine these practices without sacrificing one’s artistic identity. To establish the theoretical background, I interviewed artists who are graduates of Pallas, as well as art world participants who engage with young art, and analyzed the collected material. The practical outcome of this thesis is a conceptual painting in which magnets symbolize commercial art, referencing the artist’s experience of a split path between the ideals of fine art and the art market. To emphasize this split path, the artwork is sold piece by piece.
