Eveli Varik

Eveli Varik graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts, specializing in graphic arts. She has also studied design and spatial design, gaining recognition as an interior and product designer. Since 1999, she has been actively curating and designing exhibitions. Varik worked for nine years as the chief artist and gallery director at Rakvere Theatre. Currently, she teaches history of style and elective courses at Tartu Art School.

In the field of visual arts, Varik became known for her large-format nude photography and socially investigative exhibition projects from 1999 to 2013. During her theatre period (2014–2022), she delved into various materials and created large-scale installations, culminating in the winning artwork of the Tallinn Port D-Terminal Art Competition (2020)—a suspended glass installation titled “Under the Sun.”

As a versatile artist, Varik has recently returned to traditional techniques in visual art. In her photography-related works, she combines a refined sense of material with light, exploring the relationship between the living and the inanimate within pictorial space. In painting, she is developing a series that merges various painting techniques, investigating the role of chance in the creative process.

Varik is an artist who engages deeply with space. Light, color, and precisely defined objects exist in a purified composition—within emptiness. Her work emphasizes the significance of a carefully selected detail, which defines the meaning of the whole. She is fascinated by objects in a state of slightly surreal stillness, evoking different sensory perceptions in the viewer’s mind.

Varik does not confine herself to a single theme—her thoughts and visions are constantly evolving. However, an aesthetic consistencyremains in her artistic expression, making her signature style distinctly recognizable.
