Black Bullets is a tribute to Haiti ’s 1791 revolution, in which enslaved Africans revolted against colonial rule. Slavery by the French colonial government in Haiti is known as one of the most brutal periods of forced labor . This is the only successful slave revolution in history that laid the groundwork for Haiti’s independence in 1804. The video depicts the human figures walking around them and their reflections in a fortress on a mountain against the sky. The fortress was built by Henri Cristophe , the first black Haitian ruler , in the early 19th century to defend himself against Haitians in Haiti ..
Jeannette Ehlers (b. 1973) is a Danish Trinidadian artist who uses memory, the structures of racism and colonialism in her works to exploit her own body and image manipulation . In his performances, installations, photographs and video works , he points out that history is not the past. Colonialism still affects the distribution of power and resources both globally and in the Nordic countries.
Black Bullets will be seen in the media space of the Touch exhibition as part of a series of three media works. The series is curated by the Saastamoinen Foundation’s art collection, which deals with the human effects of war on individuals, communities and culture in different eras and around the world.
