“Woman” is sculpture made of glass and mixed materials. Texts related to violence against women are carved along the length of the sculpture’s body. Incorporating words and phrases related to sexism, hatred and everyday challenges faced by women into the body of the sculpture further enhances the impact of the work, leaving irreparable scars on the body of the sculpture. Each engraved word symbolizes the negative behaviors and attitudes that contribute to the perpetuation of violence against women, highlighting the profound influence words have in shaping our society. The aim of the work was to explore the sensitive and urgent issue of violence against women in Latvia and all over the world. The concept of the work is based on the stories submitted by women who have experienced various types of violence, and it was very important for the author to collect the stories of the women who have experienced different types of violence – every word and phrase are real stories experienced by real women. Author wanted to create a sculpture that was grotesque, in the sense that it was impossible not to look at her and not feel disgust at modern society’s excessively high tolerance for violence and the abuser. Breasts are ripped out – laid as a tombstone, she is tortured, beaten and humiliated. She is looking at collective pain of women told through these stories and she will not be able to stand up again. Violence likes silence and the author can only hope that in the near future we will pay more attention to this painful topic at the national level and provide the necessary support to all victims of violence. The author’s work is her own contribution to actualizing this topic.
