Winter Adagio, 2026

200 x 145 cm
€5850

watercolor, oil on stretched canvas

Winter Adagio is part of Silga Ivanova’s four part painting cycle Garden Sonata, a series that translates the rhythm of the seasons into visual and musical metaphors. In this work, winter is approached as a slow, introspective movement – an adagio – where time seems to stretch and quietness becomes a space for inner listening. The painting combines watercolor transparency with oil layers, creating a soft, muted atmosphere that evokes stillness, depth, and the fragile luminosity of winter light. The idea for the cycle emerged from the artist’s long-term observation of her own garden and the emotional states tied to seasonal change. Each part of Garden Sonata corresponds to a musical tempo, and Winter Adagio embodies the slowest and most contemplative one. Through tonal transitions, subdued color fields, and layered surfaces, the work reflects on rest, memory, and the quiet resilience found in nature during winter. Winter Adagio has been exhibited at the Art Academy of Latvia’s diploma exhibition Definition (2026) and featured in the artist’s portfolio as one of the central works of her Bachelor’s thesis. It represents the culmination of her interest in tonal painting, atmospheric depth, and the meditative qualities of light – themes strengthened during her Erasmus+ studies at ÉSAM Caen/Cherbourg in France.
