Autumn Moderato, 2026

200 x 145 cm
€5850

watercolor, oil on stretched canvas

Autumn Moderato reflects a moment of transition – a season where movement slows, colors soften, and the landscape enters a state of quiet balance. In this work, Silga Ivanova approaches autumn not as decline, but as a moderated pause, a steady tempo between the intensity of summer and the stillness of winter. The painting is built through layered watercolor and oil, creating a gentle haze of rust, moss green, and muted yellow tones that evoke the damp air, drifting fog, and earthy calm characteristic of the season. The idea for the piece emerged from the artist’s long-term practice of observing gardens and natural environments as emotional landscapes. During her Erasmus period in Caen, distance from her familiar surroundings sharpened her sensitivity to seasonal rhythm. Autumn became a way to explore themes of belonging, memory, and the subtle melancholy of change. Rather than depicting a specific place, Autumn Moderato distills the atmosphere of the season – its moderated pace, its quietness, and its reflective mood. The work was exhibited in the Art Academy of Latvia’s diploma exhibition Definition (2026) as part of the four painting cycle Garden Sonata. Within the cycle, Autumn Moderato serves as the bridge between movement and stillness, highlighting the artist’s interest in tonal painting, atmospheric depth, and the emotional resonance of natural transitions.
