If the abstract shapes read as a background, it is only because of how they relate to the bodies within the scene. At times the background seems to take on human qualities, and at other times the bodies dissolve into their surroundings, merging with it. In the painting The Shape of Love Changing this becomes especially clear through the third figure, whose form is composed of the same shifting elements that make up the environment. Her face is recognizably human, yet the contours of her body feel almost unfamiliar, as if she is fading into the world around her. She appears human, but in a different register. She is the only one who meets the viewer’s gaze, since the others are too busy with the ongoing act. Through her, I feel a sense of empathy. How it also speaks about a love that is changing, an inner struggle to lose one love and find another. The ultimate vulnerability of love. It is a fight that takes place both in relation to others and within yourself. Where desire bends the room.
