The Fool's Journey, 2025
Oil on MDF
My work ‘The Fool’s Journey’ is one united painting constructed out of 13 individual paintings. They have been cut to fit the shape. Each painting has a 2cm deep wooden structure behind them. The painting exists on the border between the real and the imagined, utilizing witchcraft, rituals and folklore. The work itself isn’t about witchcraft in itself, but it serves as a lens for examining phenomena and mystifying the ordinary. Any phenomenon in this reality is open to free interpretation. The central theme is about seeing signs and acting upon them, according to which ones you decide to believe in. The chosen imagery has been constantly evolving and changing places throughout the process. My interest in medieval times, mysticism and folklore have provided a certain thematic framework for what I have dwelled in. I have loved exploring the infinite network of associations that come up between past and present culture. There are references between different paintings that link to one another across the surface. Hallucinogenic berries of the belladonna plant, lucid dreaming and gathering in a witch’s sabbath can be seen as phases of a connected narrative. The three tarot cards The Fool, The High Priestess and Three of Swords can all be found as references once more in other paintings. Nothing is linear, the web is constructed through strands of thought.
