A.I.nosaur dinner, 2025
Continuing my exploration of dinosaurs and artificial intelligence, I created a video piece inspired by the 1853 Iguanodon Dinner, a dinner inside a dinosaur sculpture hosted by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. Its inaccurate dinosaurs resemble A.I.-generated images. In my installation, which interprets this event in the style of silent films, guests transform into dinosaurs during the dinner – like our discussions about A.I., which are quickly becoming outdated. I use silent films not only for stylistic reasons, but also as a commentary on the fragility of historical representation. A.I. restores old film by adding inauthentic footage – which raises questions about the representation of reality. All the dinner guests are my own characters, filmed in a studio on site. While the original dinner was attended only by men, my version also includes women at the table – like the public women’s toilets in Crystal Palace Park, which first appeared at that time. The soundtrack – a A.I. generated song in the style of a “Disney villain” – foolishly mocks the myth of modernity. The piece is an invitation to critically evaluate the “progress” of our own time and to ask what it really means to be modern.
