Unfamiliar taste

The human body acts like litmus paper for existential digestive processes. A quarrel—picked without foreseeing any harm—gives rise to the first non-childlike lines etched upon the face. Gestures intended for self-soothing may end up chafing the skin raw. The more absurd the state of being, the more desperately the body seeks to respond to it. Ultimately, out of a profound shame regarding existence, it sprouts a gnarled oak. At times, the faint glow of a hopeful beacon illuminates it, yet a psychological twilight still prevails. The meaning of a memory only begins to emerge in retrospect.

The painting exhibition by Hanna Vinter and Maria Kallau is driven by the individual’s dawning awareness of their own state; the tension has not dissipated but has reached a substation where its transformation into a satisfying conclusion is still underway. Whether the catalyst is the fragile friction between adolescence and the surrounding world, or an inescapable, fundamental sense of unease, the artists focus their gaze on states of psychological tension and their physical manifestations.
