Art&Tonic Gallery will open the exhibition “I Saw That. Peeter Allik 60” on June 20, dedicated to one of the most distinctive and influential figures in Estonian contemporary art, Peeter Allik (28 June 1966 – 31 December 2019). This summer, the exceptionally gifted artist, whose life was cut unfairly short, would have turned 60.
The exhibition brings together an extensive selection of Allik’s paintings and linocuts from private collections and will remain on view until 12 August 2026.
Peeter Allik was an artist impossible to ignore. His work is renowned for its sharp social humor, absurdist imagery, and technical mastery – qualities that characterized both his painting and graphic art. Allik’s paintings and linocuts combine black humor, social criticism, and surrealist elements. Looking at these works today, many years after their creation, we can see the artist’s uniquely keen perception, analytical insight, and remarkable foresight.
Allik began exhibiting in the second half of the 1980s with surrealist oil paintings. During the 1990s, he emerged as an exceptionally prolific artist whose work became associated both with the neo-pop movement of the early decade and with the resurgence of surrealism in its latter half.
A remarkably productive artist, Allik participated in more than 300 exhibitions in Estonia and abroad. He received numerous awards and honors, including the Ado Vabbe Scholarship, the Konrad Mägi Prize, the Kristjan Raud Prize, and several international distinctions.
The exhibition “I Saw That. Peeter Allik 60” is both an important art-historical event and an opportunity for collectors and art enthusiasts to acquire works by Allik. His art has lost neither its relevance nor its edge – these works, reflecting social attitudes and the absurdities of human nature, remain as timely today as ever.
