Art reflects its contemporaries and the society we live in, and every day we wake up to a new world to relate to. A world where we have to coexist whether we like it or not. In a time marked by war, closed borders, increased nationalism and climate denial, we need to try other ways of thinking, living and coexisting. Artists have a unique and important position here, where they are involved in reshaping our image of the present. Through art we can get keys to see beyond what we already know. Here we get to meet other people's perspectives, views and experiences. By turning up the volume or making small shifts in an otherwise mundane situation, stories and behaviors are exposed that sometimes reveal something more than what we first think we see.
The artists in the film program all have a prominent role in Swedish contemporary art. They have different backgrounds and are from different generations, but have in common that they are all active in Sweden and work with moving images. Some have the film as their main form of expression and others let it be included as one of many ways of expression.
The Art on Screen film program is divided into three parts and will be shown during the period 17 December 2022 – 11 April 2023.
First up is Transitions (December 17 – January 31), which depicts the effects of societal changes and is followed in the spring by Together (February 1–March 7) – about interpersonal relationships and Civilizing Nature (March 8 – April 11) – about the interaction between humans and nature .
The film program is compiled by Bettina Pehrsson on behalf of the Swedish Institute and in collaboration with Filmform.
