ROMANAS KRASNINKEVIČIUS: I NEVER TOOK A TRODDEN PATH

Romanas Krasninkevičius (1926-1996) is a folk graphic artist of a rich biography and enormous talent, whose existence – like that of the old Lithuanian ‘god makers’ – was based on creative work, personal experiences being the source of his creativity. Probably the deepest mark on Krasninkevičius’ creative path was left by the greatest troubles of his life: in 1944, the eighteen-year-old Romanas was taken to the front line with death constantly breathing down his neck, followed by imprisonment, interrogations, hardest work, starvation, forced service in the Soviet army, his father’s death and an absurd death of his mother, alcoholism and being forced to get rid of all kinds of pets that he kept saving, sheltering, and growing immensely attached to.
All of these motifs echo in his woodblock and linocut prints, revealing Krasninkevičius’ creative individuality.
