“Behind the sauna” – it is a place where, according to a Finnish saying, you take something if you want to get rid of it. It is also a concrete place in Porvoo where many of the works in this exhibition were created this spring, during the coronavirus pandemic. Spring is the time for a new life, the opposite of death, and the motifs and materials featured in our exhibition fall somewhere between these two great concepts.
We both create figurative drawings and, in this exhibition, even our materials are figures in themselves. For a few years, Kalle has been working on a series entitled The Winter Garden. He has used a diamond tool to engrave flowers on the screens of old televisions and computers, ice flowers growing on the surfaces of dead devices. They have been accompanied by other images depicting the warmth and coldness of life.
Sampsa has for a long time examined dead birds and animal skulls as the subjects of his drawings. Sampsa is also a tattoo artist and a hunter, now combining the materials and techniques of these two worlds.
