On June 26th the (AV17) Gallery invites you to the opening of the exhibition “Milieu” by Agnė Juodvalkytė and Julija Goyd. The exhibition of Berlin-based artists features photographs, contemporary paintings and objects focused on body and water. In their own way, the artists study the remnants of memory and the flow of time in real and anthropomorphic bodies by immersing them in water or pouring it on them. The exhibition becomes a specific zone – a milieu, where unique principals take place: light refracts, one encounters internal reflections as well as immerses in transcendent time. Here space acts as a state of transition, a threshold between infinite time and bodily fragility and entropy.

Recently, Julija Goyd has explored rather abstract themes in her photographs and video works, covering eroticism, body representation and nature, with an emphasis on water. The artist associates the latter with the connotations of transcendence and eroticism, but also remains open to the study of space of water. Using tools of physics, she conveys water as a specific zone, unknown and uninhabitable to the human body, and at the same time transforms the viewer’s comprehension, deceiving him between reality and fiction.

Agnė Juodvalkytė’s work includes paintings, textiles and objects which become a framework to understand history, culture and identity. Using clothes, natural pigments, graphite dust, pieces of dried flowers from the nature, her grandmother’s handmade canvases and household tools, the artist analyses individual and collective memories while recreating personal stories. Juodvalkytė presents canvas as objects, assemblages or human bodies that associatively affect the viewer’s imagination and memories through colors, shapes and textures.
