In the animation Spirit – Mother – Daughter, the gestures of turning, being face to face and exposure are repeated. The name of the animation refers to the views of the French philosopher Luce Irigaray. Irigaray proposes an alternative, feminine conception of god to exist alongside the masculine projection that prevails in our culture. The work also examines our eye-centered sensory culture. When our eyes are covered, our other senses have a chance to observe things and transmit their observations more easily.

In addition to the animation, a series of sculptures entitled From the Garden of Boios I-III will be on display in the space. The name comes from Ornithogonia, a work by the Greek philosopher Boios. Ornithogonia is a lost work that depicted how humans turn into birds. How could we turn into winged creatures? Could it happen by listening?

Vekkeli works with moving images and sculpture. She strives for a poetic and condensed form of expression and to establish a dialogue with philosophy and ecology. The works on display at Galleria Huuto were created out of interest in primitive pottery firing techniques and the animation process in which the clay mass and material are digitized into an immaterial surface.

Sound design for the animation: Tuomas Ollikainen. Sounds of the sculpture: Yle archives

The artist’s work has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the South Savo Regional Fund.
