Siberian Children, 2020
By Triin Kerge
Video “Siberian Children” presents six women who were sent to Siberia in 1949 during the mass deportation as children or who were born there. They returned to Estonia in their early teenage years. Their generation is the last to have first-hand memories of the deportations. Their position is rather contradicting, though, since many of them have fond memories of Siberia as their childhood home, while also being aware of their parents’ struggles. They were unable to share their experiences for more than 50 years. These people with their stories are still amongst us – we may meet them anywhere around us without knowing who they are.
