The graphic series “To Be a Ship” is inspired by the poetry written in the 1950s–1960s by Jaan Kross. Each work in the series takes the title of a selected poem and reinterprets its narrative through the artist’s own vision, language, and metaphors.
While Jaan Kross is widely celebrated as a novelist, his earlier poetry—partly written while he was a political prisoner in Siberia—has remained undeservedly in the background. The powerful field of this poetry, the different wind blowing through it, has helped guide the artist’s navigation for years.
