When experiencing dissociative episodes, it is becoming more common to notice others who are sometimes unconsciously sheltering in another space of consciousness. When experiencing an episode of dissociative disorder, specifically depersonalisation/derealisation, a sense of unreality takes over. This feeling creates fear and despair that are hardly ever visible to others. Fear of what? Nothing is real, nothing has content and, in fact, meaning is only given by you and as deep or as shallow as you wish. Despair is the only constant and lasting thing. Awareness of what is happening is freedom or doom. Everyone’s free interpretation. Main inspiration for my BA work “Nothing” was dissociative disorders, specifically derealisation/depersonalisation, where you feel like floating. Floating in hell. While researching these disorders, thanks to internet communities, I came across liminal space theorie and aesthetic. Goal for this work was to interpetate feeling of dissociation and make it more relevant with references of internet subcultures. Internet on its own is like a liminal space, where time is non-existant, so these topics compliment each other.
