Digital illustration series "The Path we Trod", 2023

100 x 100 cm

Graafikalaud, Adobe Photoshop

With this digital illustration series I was looking to create a visualisation of a person in a sensory deprivation tank which instead of throwing the viewer in a salty tub of water, explores the human as a restless explorer, restless moreso the less the human is able to do what they evolved to do: survive. When the noise of information is constant, the world full of colours and choice paralysis strips a person of themselves, one looks to pioneers and explorers of yore, men and women who threw themselves into the severe and hostile unknown. I’m living with ADHD, so if the daily noise of the world both digital and analog can be difficult for a neurotypical person, then to me it is daily angry hell. I found that I am able to focus, think fast, and endure not despite the harsh conditions I put myself in when I hike for weeks in tundra and worse, but because of them. I wanted to throw smouldering coals into the great, pale cold, and see if they become either dust or diamonds. Both are alright. The material changes under great pressure whichever way – a reinvention, recycling of material until the heat death of the universe. It’s a recurring theme in all of my personal works: an escape to someplace uncomfortable and terrible, to kickstart the cycle of being human, instead of rotting away in the comfort of the modern life, not knowing even what to want anymore besides to be known and seen and heard, things that become entirely irrelevant and uninteresting once the person exits chaos and enters the void. Those two are sisters, but certainly not twins.
