Etched Copper Plate & Etching Prints with Oil Ink

ᛁᛅᚱᚾ (Iron) was created for the exhibition SOTSTOFT (soot-dust) at Sandviken Art Gallery – Kulturcentrum (2025) and explores the relationship between material culture, craftsmanship, and historical knowledge. Developed through research into the Viking archaeological heritage of Årsunda and Sandviken, the work draws inspiration from runestones, metalworking traditions, and the symbolic role of iron in Nordic history. The project was realized under the guidance of Richard Schill, chief of the Årsunda Viking Village and a published researcher on Viking history. Etched onto a copper plate, the composition combines historical references with contemporary interpretation. Three blacksmiths represent the transmission of craft knowledge across generations, while the figure of Regin, the legendary blacksmith, appears as a guardian of metallurgical wisdom. The rune for “iron” and two intertwined dragons further reinforce themes of transformation, strength, and creation. Rather than reconstructing the past, ᛁᛅᚱᚾ (Iron) reimagines historical symbols through a contemporary sculptural language, reflecting my ongoing interest in how materials and craftsmanship preserve, transmit, and reinterpret cultural knowledge across time. Displayed alongside Kabuto and Jingasa at the Bildmuseet in the graduation exhibition Of Love and Care (2026).
