Eddie Choo Wen Yi is a multidisciplinary artist based in Helsinki, Finland, whose work explores themes of belonging, identity, and displacement, focusing on how memory, migration, and archival absence shape personal and collective histories. Integrating historical research, material experimentation, and storytelling, their practice reflects on power dynamics, social structures, and the tensions between the local, global, personal, and political. Eddie holds a Diploma in Fine Arts (Painting) from Dasein Academy of Art (2010), a BFA in Sculpture from Taipei National University of the Arts (2018), and a BFA in Time and Space at the Fine Arts Academy, Helsinki University of the Arts (2023). They are currently pursuing an MFA at the same institution while participating in an Erasmus exchange at Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin, culminating in the Master Graduation Exhibition in Helsinki in May 2025. Their solo exhibitions include Madline 2.0 (2015) and Diary of Madline (2013) at Lostgens’ Art Space, Kuala Lumpur. Group exhibitions include In Continuous Dialogue: Tracing Memories at Gallery Oksasenkatu 11, Helsinki (2023); This is Not a Poisoned Apple at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan (2015); Di Mana (Where Are You?) at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2017); and Extending Ideas at Museum & Gallery Tengku Fauziah, USM, Malaysia (2016). Eddie’s recent performance is part of Várzea: Spaces for Relief, Conjugations, 36th Bienal de São Paulo, Brazil (2025). Eddie has participated in residencies at the Underground Art Museum, Taipei (2018), and Lostgens’ Art Space, Kuala Lumpur (2013), as well as community and public art projects such as South Gate (2016) in Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia. They have contributed to art festivals, including The Space Between Art Festival in Copenhagen (2021). Recent recognitions include the Finnish Art Society’s Young Artist Grant (2023) and selection for The Academy of Fine Arts’ international mentoring programme, supported by the Saastamoinen Foundation (2024). Eddie is a member of the Station of Commons collective, Helsinki and Geneva, and contributed to lumbung radio projects including Waves: Radio as Collective Imagination (2024, Miss Read Art Book Fair). Upcoming projects include the Master Graduation Exhibition in Helsinki (May 2025) and the Navigating Grief class exhibition at KunstHalle, Berlin (February 2025).
