Valerija Oja Emerging artist
Artist is based in: Estonia
Valerija Oja (b. 2002) is an artist based in Tallinn, Estonia, working primarily in painting while also engaging with glass, sgraffito, ceramics and other material-based practices. She graduated with a BA in Painting from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2026 and studied as an exchange student at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, Germany, from 2023 to 2024. Oja’s practice explores corporeality, vulnerability, and materiality, operating between figuration and abstraction. She is interested in the coexistence of opposing states—tenderness and violence, fragility and resilience, the organic and the artificial. Her works intertwine human and animal forms, personal experiences, and existential themes. She has exhibited in Estonia and Germany, including the duo exhibition Maybe We Should Sleep on the Floor Tonight (Schaudepot am Marktplatz, Karlsruhe, 2023), the group exhibition Compost of Happiness (Narva Art Residency, 2024), and the duo exhibition I Don’t Want to Wake Up Yet (Täisnurga Gallery, Tallinn, 2026). From 2024 to 2025, she worked as a gallerist at Täisnurga Gallery.
