Piia Hiltunen Emerging artist

Piia Hiltunen

Artist is based in: Finland

Piia Hiltunen works primarily with sculpture and installation. Her practice blends personal experience with the imaginative, drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources, including art history, mythology, unusual plants and insects, dreams, fairy tales, and news that captures her attention. Through her work, she often reflects on human emotions with warmth and humour.

Hiltunen works with both traditional and contemporary materials, including bronze, clay, glass, and silicone. Colour plays a significant role in her work, alongside an exploration of form and texture. Her sculptures evolve through the interplay between technique and the inherent qualities of the materials, with the creative process often lasting several months or even up to a year. She allows each work to develop gradually, leaving room for unexpected outcomes arising from the materials and process.

Piia Hiltunen (b. 1982) is based in Helsinki and studies in the Sculpture Department at the University of the Arts Helsinki. She graduated from Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture in 2022, majoring in Design and minoring in Sculpture. She will complete her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of the Arts Helsinki by the end of 2026. Her work has been exhibited at Kuva/Tila Gallery and at the Mänttä Art Festival at Pekilo Gallery. Hiltunen has also won her first public art competition, with her first public sculpture scheduled for completion in 2029.
