Nelly Toussaint Emerging artist

Nelly Toussaint

Artist's country of origin: Finland

Nelly Toussaint’s work disrupts Western art history, inserting feminist language into its foundations. By re-drawing intaglio prints from art museums’ collections, embroidering feminist slogans using her own hair and drawing self-portraits, Toussaint explores how women are represented in Western art history and how these representations have been used as instruments of domination, in order to reclaim feminist narratives. Blending personal experiences, Western art history, and feminist critique, Nelly Toussaint invites viewers to free their minds from oppressive patriarchal representations and to create their own personal stories. Toussaint’s work is both intimate and universal. After graduating with a BA in photography from the University Paris 8 in 2010, she joined the Academy of Fine Arts La Villa Arson in Nice, where she obtained a Bachalor’s degree. In 2024 she joined the Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts, where she is finishing a Master’s degree in the Printmaking departement. Her work is held in many important private and public collections including the Finnish National Gallery, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (National Library of France, Paris) ,the Päivi and Paavo Lipponen collection and the Kiasma Museum. She has participated in several exhibitions across Europe, including in France, Belgium, Monaco, Germany, Estonia and Finland. Born in France, she is based in Helsinki since 2017.
