nauthey (b. 2023) is a white creature formed from two, whose intertwined practice binds brutal realism and naive dreams together with tight satin ribbons. The genderfluid creature living in Helsinki seeks to question individualism and the ownership of visual innovations. nauthey’s spatially bound, sensual installations invite the visitor to reflect on power structures, agency and social conventions. The transience of works produced from trash, recycled materials and media softly opposes the culture of producing new objects. With the pulse of vibrating strap-ons, nauthey is ready to glaze rigid institutional structures with shiny lubricant towards gentle rebellion, a revolution of tenderness. nauthey moves vaguely between European “highbrow” and subcultures, from white galleries to dirty darkrooms; their work has been exhibited at the Halle und Quergalerie in Berlin, various exhibitions at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki and at the WHOLE festival in Germany, amongst others. nauthey is formed by Nunu Anundi (they/them) graduating as Bachelor of Arts and Ansku Nousiainen (they/them) who has applied to the Academy twice without being admitted. By working together in the surroundings of exclusionary art school nauthey intervenes the power of the selection committee and expands the outlines of the community of the “chosen ones”.
