Marit Loitmets is a painter interested in what happens to memories when there is no one left to remember them firsthand. Drawing on family archives, photo albums, inherited objects, and oral histories, her work explores the connections between memory, identity, and belonging. Working between photorealism and abstraction, she creates paintings in which personal and collective layers of memory intertwine through colour, pattern, and fragmented imagery. Rather than expressing a longing for the past, nostalgia in her work becomes a way of attending to what is already fragile, fading, and at risk of being lost.
