Artist is based in: Estonia
Karolina Peterson is an multimedia artist whose practice combines video art, installation, performance, and scenography. During her studies in scenography, she developed a strong interest in video art and has since explored its many forms and possibilities. Her work spans music videos, narrative filmmaking, performance documentation, animation, and a feature-length film created as her bachelor’s thesis.
A central focus of Peterson’s practice is montage and its ability to shape meaning, attention, and emotional experience. She is particularly interested in the dynamics between movement and stillness, the role of rhythm and tempo in storytelling, and the ways visual narratives can guide a viewer’s attention. Through these explorations, she has addressed themes such as queerness, politics, grief, and identity.
In her solo exhibitions Kara Popicon. Foto. Video. and Riia mu arm, video works were presented alongside immersive scenographic environments, transforming the exhibition space into a total artistic experience. The theatrical dimension of her work remains essential, reflecting her desire to create artworks that are immediate, intense, and impossible to ignore.
Peterson’s practice has often been associated with a punk sensibility, expressed through an uncompromising sincerity and emotional openness. Drawing on personal experiences, her work seeks to make intimate and complex subjects visible and shareable. Boldness, vulnerability, and emotional intensity are defining qualities of her artistic approach.
