Jana Mätas Emerging artist
Artist is based in: Estonia
Jana Mätas is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Tallinn. Her practice is rooted in attentive encounters with the physical world and often begins with found objects, discarded materials, or everyday situations that unexpectedly demand her attention. Working intuitively and through embodied, non-verbal modes of thinking, she is interested in the tensions and recognitions that emerge between humans, materials, and their surroundings. In her recent work, Mätas has explored themes of vulnerability, coexistence, and survival, often using overlooked or low-value materials. Meaning emerges gradually through working alongside materials and through the relationships formed between objects, sound, text, light, and space. Her installations are frequently accompanied by fragments of poetic prose, reflecting an ongoing interest in the paradoxical relationship between language and what remains beyond it. Mätas studied Estonian Language and Literature at the University of Tartu and she received a BA in Photography from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2021 and an MA in Contemporary Art from the same institution in 2026.
