Plastic Blossom is a 6-channel video installation of 3D animated loops depicting decorative flowers made from plastic bottles. Mimicking time-lapse videos of growing plants, the flowers open up slowly, each following its own internal logic. Although the flowers are presented in isolation, their plastic surfaces reflect images of a run-down urban environment around them.
Silja Puranen. Plastic Blossom
The theme of the show is humanity’s relationship with and impact on nature and the environment, with an emphasis on plastic, the environmental problems caused by its excessive and reckless use, and our attempt to outdo nature with artificial imitations. The problem of plastic waste is today paralleled by concerns regarding the threat to biodiversity. The works derive their visual inspiration from the material aesthetics of plastic, kitsch, camp and the DIY attitude. Each animated loop lasts about 60 seconds.
