The twelve self-portraits were made in a period of 3 years (2018 – 2021). Each depicts a non-existent person that captures the inner emotions of a particular situation or time period. During that time Laura was doing a lot of contemplation and self-reflection, therefore, these imaginary people became mirrors of her subconscious world. Using painting as an alternative outlet for her feelings helped Kaktiņa resolve inner emotional challenges.
In addition to the pop-up, M/Gallery will present “Giving In” solo show by Kaktiņa, showcasing 10 paintings inspired by the Latvian landscapes, namely Kurzeme’s coast – Pāvilosta and Jūrkalne. Kaktiņa’s work is characterised by earthy tones and smooth, calming colour fields. The near-perfect symmetry and positioning of the objects within the landscapes pay homage to Laura’s background in graphic design, where the visual language follows strict rules of composition.
The event is part of the Riga Last Thursdays.
