Acoustic Density, an exhibition featuring works by Arturas Bumšteinas, Elena Laurinavičiūtė and Alessandro Perini, opens at (AV17) Gallery on Thursday, 22 October at 6 pm. Curated by Agnė Jonkutė, the exhibition is organised by Pamėnkalnio Gallery in collaboration with its project partner, (AV17) Gallery.
The exhibition brings together three distinct artistic approaches to sound and form. Here, sound becomes visible, tangible, or entirely silenced. The exhibition unfolds through different states: sound cast into form, sound touched and absorbed, sound made visible, and sound set in motion.
Arturas Bumšteinas (b. 1982, Vilnius) is a composer and creator of experimental music and sound installations that draw on the expressive languages of theatre and radio art. He returns to the gallery with casts of a vinyl record of his own creation. Sound that once resonated in this space during the 2020 exhibition Goldberg Variations (with Gytis Bertulis) now takes the form of a unique object. Sound returns as a physical artefact. Elena Laurinavičiūtė (b. 1993, Anykščiai) is an artist working with sound-based practices, sounding ceramics, aerophones and installations. Touch is essential to her work, both in shaping the material and in hearing the sounds it produces. When set in motion, fired-clay objects take in air and begin to resonate. Sound emerges from the meeting of four elements: earth, air, water and movement.
Alessandro Perini (b. 1983, Cantù, Italy) is an Italian composer and sound artist who explores the interaction between acoustic instruments, electronics, and mechanical objects he constructs himself. Synthetic low-frequency vibrations composed by the artist are transmitted to eight contact transducers, each attached to a plexiglass dish filled with water. The vibration of the dish sets the water surface in motion. Light makes the movement of the surface visible, forming a directly coupled audiovisual system. The artist’s participation is supported by the Swedish Arts Grants Committee.
The three-artist exhibition Acoustic Density is presented as part of Laconica, an ongoing programme developed by Pamėnkalnio Gallery. Conceived as a platform for artists exploring the possibilities of minimalist expression, Laconica takes a broad view of minimalism, looking beyond the tradition that emerged in the 1960s to explore its underlying ways of thinking in contemporary artistic practices. These include the capacity of ideas and forms to convey meaning, a minimal approach to storytelling, an economy of means, a critique of excess, and an ecology of thought.
Previous editions of Laconica explored the relationship between monochrome and minimalist poetry (2021), and the interplay of colour and scent (2023). The third edition invites audiences to focus on sound – a counterpoint to silence and pause, a carrier of immaterial experience. Within the programme, sound becomes a conceptual layer of artistic language, connecting music, visual art and interdisciplinary practices.
This year’s Laconica comprises three events:
