Fish artist Niina Räty opens the background of the exhibition: For the last couple of years I've been painting fish and fishing a few times. In the midst of my own work, I have talked a lot with my colleagues about fish, painting and eating them, meanings and herring steaks. I invited fish makers to participate in the exhibition. The history of painting is full of fish still lifes, silver-sided fish on silver platters, fish juxtaposed with a translucent onion, or squirming on the dirty counter of a market stall. As a subject, fish is loaded with meanings, often Christian ones, vanitasphile and everyday description, but above all it often seems to be full of the painter's pure joy. A fish is a stick through which light is refracted.

Other fish artists’ thoughts on fish:
Fish are a joy for people both in the water and in the jar. Humans like fish too much, and that’s why ecosystems are destabilizing.

What is hard in us? It is armlessness, leglessness, muteness, silence, darkness, dampness, passivity, archaism and immobility. Man meets himself in the eyes of a fish. The image of a fish is the image of a person.
– Siiri Haarla
Often already as children we adopt the traditions and symbolism related to fishing. Generation after generation fishes as it has always been fished.

As a resting place, the home of a fish.

The fish, ikhtys in Greek, was the creed of the early Christians and one of the oldest Christian symbols. According to one church father, the Jesus fish is a big fish and Christians are a bunch of small fish.

Long-nosed and large-mouthed, that’s how the pike has always been. Self-contained and natural from a young age.
